And here we are, season twenty. Yes, after twelve of the previous nineteen seasons have been released on DVD, Fox decides to mess with our minds and skip ahead a few notches! And why?

Well, best guess: HD. Yes, this is the first season of “The Simpsons” to include episodes shot in HD. Not all of them are, but many are, and it makes a difference!

Quality wise, this season was up there with most of the last few: mostly good episodes, a few great ones and only one or two that were “meh”. I don’t generally laugh out loud at the show anymore, but I do chuckle quite a bit and usually come away having had a good time.

“Sex, Pies and Idiot Scrapes” – Homer and Flanders team up to become bounty hunters! With special guest star Robert Forster, playing basically the same character he played in Tarantino’s best film, “Jackie Brown”.

“Lost Verizon” – An average episode where Bart gets his hands on Dennis Leary’s cell phone.

“Double, Double, Boy in Trouble” – Yep. They went there. A “The Prince and the Pauper” ripoff. Some good moments, but not a great story.

“Treehouse of Horror XIX” – One of the best of the Halloween specials, particularly “It’s the Grand Pumpkin, Milhouse!”

“Dangerous Curves” – A reasonably decent flashback episode showing Homer and Marge’s early romantic life.

“Homer and Lisa Exchange Cross Words” – Enter the exciting world of crossword puzzles!

“Mypods and Boomsticks” – Remember the “American Dad!” episode where Stan though the neighbors were terrorists? Yes? Then you’ve seen this one. Also, Lisa gets a portable mp3 playing device.

“The Burns and the Bees” – Burns tries to be an interesting and popular millionare with hilarious results! Ok, they weren’t THAT hilarious, but was a good episode anyhow.

“Lisa the Drama Queen” – Lisa meets another girl who is rather disturbingly wrapped up in a fantasy world of her own creation.

“Take My Life, Please” – Welcome to the exiciting world of HIGH DEF SIMPSONS! Honestly, I don’t remember much about this episode beyond that, which is not a good sign. Apparently it involves spaghetti.

“How the Test Was Won” – Not a great episode, but some funny moments watching Homer deal with the fact that, for a while, the family is uninsured!

“No Loan Again, Naturally” – When the Simpsons lose their home, Flanders buys it and rents to them, with hilarious results! Easily one of the better episodes of the season.

“Gone Maggie Gone” – A reasonably ok take on “The da Vinci Code”-style of story. Not great, but ok.

“In the Name of the Grandfather” – The Simpsons visit Ireland, only to find out that it’s not what they expected!

“Wedding for Disaster” – Mix in the “Saw” movie franchise and Sideshow Bob and what do you get? … Well, you get this. Which is pretty good!

“Eeny Teeny Maya Moe” – Moe develops a small problem in his love-life.

“The Good, the Sad and the Drugly” – Bart falls in love, Lisa obesses over global warming, and I lose interest. Not a bad episode, but certainly not great.

“Father Knows Worst” – Homer becomes a helicopter parent and Marge discovers the joy of the sauna!

“Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-D’oh” – Homer rents an apartment in an upscale neighborhood so the kids can attend a better school. Guest staring Anton Chigurh as the hilarious school inspector!

“Four Great Women and a Manicure” – Another anthology episode. This one is better than most, and features a great take on Ayn “What a hot guy!” Rand. The lowest-rated episode in the show’s history, but one I rather liked!

“Coming to Homerica” – Ogdenville experiences a massive crisis, resulting in them bringing their Norweigan ways to Springfield! Beware, America, of the ludefisk menace on your border!

The extras will probably be what we usually have with these DVDs. Expect a lot of commentaries and deleted scenes, and probably something talking about the show’s transition to HD.

Overall this is a good season and one I look forward to owning!

The Simpsons have been around for more than 20 years now and it`s safe to say that if you ever surfed your television you came across them. It paved the way for other animated comedy shows of its genre, it has more than 400 episodes to its credit, won a few awards, it`s been on air since seemingly forever and there`s plenty more to say about it. There have been some complaints about the decline of the show ever since the beginning the 00`s. It`s hard to pick a season where the decline really began but it is true that the show is not as good as it was I`ll admit it, but I think it`s still good and I still enjoy it. Since some time each season has a few great episodes mixed with a few good ones and some not-so-good one, season 20 is no different.

Now I won`t be doing an episode list because some other reviewers will take care of that. But I really liked a few episodes like “Eeny Teeny Maya Moe” in which Moe has a new romance, “No Loan Again, Naturally” was great with Ned Flanders helping the Simpsons trough difficult time as they reached bankruptcy and this season`s “Treehouse of Horror XIX” was very good and the allusion to Charlie Brown was brilliant. The worst episode of this season is perhaps the worst in the show`s history “Four Great Women and a Manicure” , another Simpsons twist on history but this one proves to be the worst yet. The season was mostly good.

You will notice a change in the visual style of the show, it is pretty much the same but somehow it’s different. It features more technology which turns out to be very funny and the visual style has changed a little it’s like the show has gotten a facelift, and I don’t think it hurt after so many years you’re bound to change at some point. You will also notice the new title sequence for the show, I like it but I miss Homer’s scream from the original! The Simpsons are now in HD and it looks very good.I`d like to think that the box of this season will be different than season 11 and 12`s accordion style but no one really knows now. They should really consider doing something else or return to the older boxes format I never hear anyone complain about those. I know how they want to do an eco-friendly packaging but it`s obviously not a hit with most fans, it didn`t look so good and I didn`t like how it scratched my discs and I`m sure I wasn`t the only one.

Season 20 is not bad really but it just doesn’t compare well to the earlier seasons. I don’t laugh as I much as I used to while watching the show but I still find it entertaining and worth watching. There were some very good episodes and this season was better than a few of the previous ones. I don’t know why they are releasing this one ahead of the others (13-19), yes it’s the 20th anniversary but still this will make some fans angry. I’ll give season 20 three stars it was a good season. So will I be buying? Well yes because it’s still better than no Simpsons in my opinion and if you don’t like the show at this point then don’t bother with it that’s all.

“The Terrifying Truth” represents something I never idea I’d see: A romantic comedy that both women and men will luxuriate in. Granted, it probably won’t be for the same reasons. Women will like it because underneath it all, it’s a fairly typical romantic comedy, the yarn of Girl Hates Boy, Boy Hates Girl, Boy and Girl Descend in Like Anyway. Men will like it because one of the main characters expresses powerful of what they reflect and feel on a daily basis. Everyone will like it because the anecdote is captivating and the characters are not mere cardboard caricatures. You can actually invest in them, and you’re able to care about what’s going on. What could easily have been a routine date night movie is instead a surprisingly satisfactory movie that need not wait until date night. It’s also genuinely funny–a bit raunchy, yes, but amusing unprejudiced the same.

Much of the film’s success is due to the fabulous onscreen chemistry between Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. They continuously execute us laugh, yet the comedy is not so gargantuan that you can’t contain them in their roles. They produce a point of interacting with one another, not as funny relief but as sincere people. Heigl plays Abby Richter, the romantically challenged, neurotic, controlling producer of a failing Sacramento morning talk prove. Butler plays Mike Chadaway, the chauvinistic host of a public access relationship program called “The Repugnant Truth.” He’s unapologetically tell-it-like-it-is in matters of men and women. There’s no such thing, he claims, as a sensitive, nurturing man who wants to connect at an emotional level. Men impartial want sex, monotonous and simple. And they only want it with fair women.

Abby, who thinks Mike’s rhetoric is appalling, is skittish when she learns that he has been hired to her site in an grief to boost ratings. They clash at every turn … until he learns that she’s eager in dating her next door neighbor–an orthopedic surgeon named Colin (Eric Winter) who honest happens to be incredibly beautiful. Sensing she’s doing everything cross to start a relationship, Mike offers to encourage Abby by having her test his relationships theories on Colin. She reluctantly agrees, and certain enough, Mike’s methods work wonders. She dresses more provocatively. She learns to discontinuance being primary and avoid discussing her personal problems. She learns to be the embodiment of both the saint and the sinner, or as Mike puts it, “The librarian and the stripper.”

And that’s when things launch to bag more complex. Abby is succeeding with Colin, but only at the expense of not being herself. On the other hand, could anyone admire her as herself? She is, after all, known for bringing background checks and printed topics of conversation to blind dates. As for Mike, he has very distinct reasons for believing that loving relationships are a sham. They’re gradually revealed not only through carefully structured scenes, but also through Butler, who shows he can get the good balance between smug and sensitive. We discover that Mike is the closest thing his young nephew has for a father, and even though he playfully gives the boy relationship advice, he’s also fleet to remind him that kids should never, ever seek his exhibit.

Heigl also manages a balancing act with her performance, specifically between strength and vulnerability. Abby overachieves at work to compensate for a lack of a worship life, which initially seems laughable but steadily grows desperate. For reasons she doesn’t care to admit to, she’s falling in like with Mike, and he too is falling in fancy with her. But what about Colin? Is he with Abby only because of the façade Mike told her to build up? There’s a scene between her and Colin tedious in the film that directly addresses this swear, and to my delight, it’s handled in a method that avoids objective about everything that would happen in the average romantic comedy. There are no shouting matches. There are no flying fists. There are no confrontations. There’s only a collected moment of realization that the truth is indeed frightening.

Scenes like these are wonderfully juxtaposed with moments of well written comedy. There are some very comic moments between Cheryl Hines and John Michael Higgins as unhappily married news anchors who fraction the same desk and time slot. The film’s single funniest scene takes plot in a restaurant and involves Abby, an extremely stimulating pair of underwear, and a control plan that ends up in the nefarious hands.

I can say with complete honesty (and some embarrassment) that I wasn’t expecting such a strong film. I certainly wasn’t expecting a strong film belonging to this particular genre. What floors me is that two of the three writers of this film are Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith. There are the same two that brought us “The House Bunny,” one of the worst films of 2008. They certainly got it apt this time around. “The Repugnant Truth” is one of the best romantic comedies I’ve seen in a long time, a savory and engrossing anecdote about the fronts people show. It’s laughable without lowering itself to the level of cheap gags, and this is in spite of the film’s well-deserved R rating. Heigl and Butler convincingly pull off a romance, no miniature feat given the contrived nature of these kinds of films. At last, a date movie both the man and the woman can delight in.

this is a very raunchy correct to the point film which is extremely hilarious as long as you have a very commence mind and are not at all prudish. gerry and katherine play off each other with spacious ease and are very comfortable in this very comic sex comedy about how men really deem about sex and relationships according to mike,gerrys character, against kathys character, who is a very uptight traditional chick. the film is all about their inevitable clashes against their varied opinions on this topic and how they survive working together on a early morning chat present. i thoroughly recommend this film for an extremely comedic time for both men and women. it is not your usual chick flick and most people will be able to connect with this film and its morales, even though they might not want to admit it.

Sparks fly in this video of the all-star concert from Berlin’s equivalent of the Hollywood Bowl in July 2006, part of the World Cup festivities. The electricity is generated by the all-star trio of tenors Placido Domingo and Rolando Villazon and soprano Anna Netrebko in a program of operatic and vocal favorites. The crowd estimated at 20,000 eats it all up, and so will home viewers who’ll relish the prospect of great singers performing great music.

Domingo is his usual self, still remarkable at an age when most tenors have called it quits. He sings with intensity and a voice undimmed by the passing of time. Domingo’s duts with his partners are notable for his acute phrasing, the highlights being the first-act love dut from Verdi’s Otello with Netrebko’s gorgeous lyric Desdemona and the ravishing dut with Villazon from Bizet’s The Pearlfishers, in which he takes on the baritone role. Netrebko seems slightly stiff at first but loosens up as the evening progresses, but she’s in excellent voice, with luminous pianissimos most sopranos wish they could emulate. Her Puccini arias are beautifully sung, and she even offers a Franz Lehar aria and a charmingly accented dut, “Tonight,” from West Side Story with Villazon. But if anyone can be said to steal the show it’s Villazon, a singer in perpetual motion, who brings the house down with a version of Rossini’s La Danza full of dash and brio. There’s a lot more, from Spanish songs to arrangements of the Brindisi from La traviata and Lehar’s <Das Land des Lachelns featuring all three singers, with the tenors dividing their lines between to woo the soprano. These are part of the scintillating encore set–good fun that has the audience panting for more.

Expert accompaniments are by the Orchestra of the Deutschen Opera of Berlin under the baton of conductor Marco Armiliato, who also offers several well-shaped operatic overtures and intermezzos and joins in the fun during the unbuttoned encores. Too bad the video direction doesn’t match the on-stage proceedings. The production team apparently suffers from camera nervosa, the cameras swooping above the scene, then to floor level, now up, now down, now in close-up, now in long shot, searching for novelty while distracting from the music. There are also misjudged cuts, jumps, and angles. This hyperactivity doesn’t seriously mar enjoyment but it is a blemish on a terrific concert. –Dan Davis
